An incredible pianist in NOLA

ニューオリンズに“Incredible”なピアニストがいると紹介されて、どうやったら会えるだろうかと考えながらフレンチメン・ストリートを散策していたら、ジャズ・ビストロ「Snug Harbor」のバー・カウンターに彼が居たのです。なんて奇遇！名前はオスカー・ロシニョーリ。中米ルーツな雰囲気もミックスされている様子から、漫画「BLUE GIANT」で登場するメキシコ出身のアントニオを連想してしまいましたが、勝ち気でトゲあるアントニオと比較して、現実世界のオスカーは、とても穏やかなナイス・ガイ。ちょうど地元のMarigny Opera Balletの公演を終えたばかりという彼の時間を少しだけ頂戴して、観光要素無しの、現在のリアルなニューオリンズの音楽と、そこに至る彼のヒストリーについてお伺いしました。

What a coincidence! Because when I was walking along Frenchmen Street, wondering how I could meet the “incredible” pianist from New Orleans, I suddenly encountered him at a bar counter inside a jazz bistro named “Snug Harbor”. His name is Oscar Rossignoli. His Central American roots reminded me of Antonio, the Mexican character from the manga “BLUE GIANT”, but in comparison to the strong-willed and sharp-tongued Antonio, the real-life Oscar is a very gentle and such a nice guy. I asked him a few questions about the current and real music scene in New Orleans and his history, as he had just finished performing with the local Marigny Opera Ballet.

Literally keep extending

ハイチ生まれの母に育てられたんだ。残念ながら癌で他界してしまったけれど、彼女のおかげで小さい頃から音楽漬けの生活だった。10歳になる前にはドラムをはじめホンデュラスで生まれ育ったんだ。サン・ペドロ・スーラという街だよ。最初に音楽の影響を与えてくれたのは父で、よく家で演奏してくれた。自分のスタイルを持っていて、とてもいい音楽だったと思う。教会にも行っていたし、7歳頃からクラシックも勉強した。その後ラテン音楽に触れ、高校生の頃には友達とジャズを楽しんでいたよ。さまざまなスタイルを実践していた故チック・コリアはヒーローのうちのひとりだね。

I was born and raised in Honduras. It's a city called San Pedro Sula. My father was the first person to influence me musically, and he used to play music at home. I think he had his own style and it was really good music. I also went to church and studied classical music from around the age of 7. After that, I got familiar with latin music, and when I was in high school I discovered jazz with my friends. The late Chick Corea, who practiced a variety of styles, was one of my heroes.

ニューオリンズでは“Extended”というバンドをもう３年以上やっているんだ。メンバー全員が作曲家で、すべてオリジナル曲を演奏する。アルバムは３枚出していて、新しいタイトルもこれから出る予定。とてもユニークなテイストの作品だと思う。僕らは型にハマらないやり方が好き。演奏の途中ですらどこに辿り着くのかわからない。文字通りいつも「拡張」しているし、終わりがないのさ。

In New Orleans, I have been playing with my band “Extended” for over three years now. All the members are composers, and we play all original songs. We've released three albums, and we're planning to release a new one soon. I think it's a very different project than everything else. We don't really have a structure of what we do. Even during a performance, you never know where you're going to land. Literally keeps extending, we never end up same.

It’s a feeling

今夜一緒に演奏するジョン・ブッテは素晴らしいアーティストだよ。ニューオリンズのアイコンだと思うし、いつだってたくさんのストーリーを与えてくれる。彼は君を受け入れてくれるし、君はきっと彼のファンになると思う。ギグに来ている感覚というより、家族や友人とハングしている感じに近いと思う。

John Butte, who I'm playing with tonight, is a great artist. I think he's an icon of New Orleans, and he always has a lot of stories to tell. He embraces you and you become a fan. It's more like hanging out with family and friends than coming to a gig.

僕はこの街の音楽が象徴するのは、フィーリングだと思う。ほかのどこでも感じることができないフィーリング。とても脳に働きかけるし、そこで起こっていることを理解するために、たくさんのことを知らないといけない。だからジャズひとつとっても、その姿はとても多様なのさ。モダンなものにも、ラウンジなもの、それにファンクやラテンにだってなる。それがニューオリンズさ。本当にさまざまな音楽があって、すべてが満たされている。この街の香りにね。だからほかのどんなジャズとも、アメリカの音楽とも違うのさ。

So I would say you have to come and see it. Because for me, what this city’s music represents is a feeling. It's a feeling that I don't hear anywhere else in this country or in my country. Jazz, for example, can become many things. And to me, you know, the music of New Orleans can be traditional, can be modern, funk and also the Latin. That's in New Orleans. So there are so many things, but everything is impregnated with this. With this flavor, you know, like it feels different than any other jazz and American music.

Ultimately why I do it

いつも自分がやっていることがなんであれ、常にオーディエンスと繋がっていることさ。だって自分がなにをやっても、今日やっていることが明日嫌いになったとしても、それでも自分がちゃんとオーディエンスと繋がっていたら、それは常に特別なことになるし、僕を満たしてくれる。それが結局のところ僕がこの仕事をしている理由なのさ。

My one wish as an artist is to always, whatever I'm doing, be in a way that I can connect with the audience. You know, because no matter what I do, because today I like something, tomorrow I don't like it, but if I connect with the audience, it's always gonna be a special. So it's gonna be fulfilling to me as well, which is ultimately why I do it.

オスカー・ロシニョーリ（ピアニスト）

オスカー・ロシニョーリはホンジュラス出身で、ニューオーリンズ大学への留学を機に2015年よりニューオーリンズを拠点に活動する、引っ張りだこのピアニスト兼作曲家。彼は、クラシック音楽の素養からラテン音楽や北米ジャズへの情熱まで、自身の音楽に多くの伝統を取り入れている。また、マット・ブースやブラッド・ウェッブとのEXTENDEDトリオや自身のカルテットのリーダーとして、さまざまな場面やバンドでその名を知られている。ジョン・ブット、ジェイソン・マルサリス、ジョー・ダイソン、ディー・ディー・ブリッジウォーター、アレクセイ・マルティなど、数多くのアーティストと幅広いプロジェクトでコラボレーションを行っている。
