ネオ・ソウルのシンガーと身勝手に認識していたビラルのイメージはいとも簡単に崩れ去りました。彼は紛れもなくリアル・ソウルのシンガーです。そう断言できるほどにエネルギッシュでタフがギグをこの日に堪能することができました。本場ニューヨークのブルーノートは東京店の高級サロン感とは打って変わって音楽に集中せざるを得ないほどギュウギュウのシーティング。居心地の良さは全くなし。それでもまったく苦痛に感じなかったのは、単に音楽が素晴らしかったから。それでいい。それだけでいい。

The image of Bilal, whom I had casually labeled as a neo-soul singer, was shattered in an instant. He is undoubtedly a real soul singer. His energetic and solid performance this day was enough to make that clear. The Blue Note in New York, the center of Jazz music, was a far cry from the upscale salon atmosphere of the Tokyo branch. The seating was so cramped that you couldn't help but focus on the music. There was no comfort at all. Yet I wasn’t irritated at all, simply because the music was amazing. That's enough. That's all that matters.

フィラデルフィア生まれ、現在はニューヨーク在住。ザ・ルーツのアミール（クエストラヴ）が、Q・ ティップを通じて手に入れたデモ・テープを聴いて一発で気に入り、ディアンジェロのツアー・バック・ヴォーカリストとして起用したのが業界の注目を浴びる きっかけとなる。ディアンジェロ同様、ビラルは教会でキャリアをスタート。3人のイトコと組んだ「ホリネス」というゴスペル・グループのメンバーとして、フィリー時代、教会でのパフォーマンスで経験を積む。しかしビラルが夢見ていたのはジャズであり、ビッ グ・バンドだった。その夢を求め、ビラルはニューヨークへと旅立った。
先行シングル「ソウル・シスタ」のようなディープ なバラードからブルーズまでビラルの音楽は軽くジャンルを超える。「オレは、高校時代小説を書いていたようにモノ書きになりたかった。それから役者にも。 だからオレは小説のとある”章”や劇中の”シーン”のように曲を書くことができる。オレの曲は全部自分の生活について。でもくだらないモノは創りたくな い、だから時々想像力を働かせるんだ。でもそれも全部自分の生活の範囲の中でのことさ。」そんな私小説ともいえるデビュー・アルバムのタイトルは 『１ｓｔ・ボーン・セカンド』。ビラル曰く両親の第一子であり、ソウル・ムーヴメントの第２世代という意味だという。

Born in Philadelphia, currently residing in New York. Ahmir (Questlove) of The Roots heard his demo tape through Q-Tip and was immediately impressed, leading to his selection as a tour backup vocalist for D'Angelo, which brought him into the industry spotlight. Like D'Angelo, Bilal started his career in church. As a member of the gospel group “Holiness” with three cousins, he gained his experience performing in churches during his time in Philadelphia. However, Bilal's dream was jazz and big bands. In pursuit of that dream, Bilal moved to New York.
From deep ballads like his lead single “Soul Sister” to blues, Bilal's music effortlessly crosses genres. “I wanted to be a writer, like I wrote novels in high school. Then I wanted to be an actor. So I can write songs like a chapter in a novel or a scene in a play. All my songs are about my life. But I don't want to create something trivial, so sometimes I use my imagination. But it's all within the scope of my own life.” The title of his debut album, which could be described as a private novel, is “1st Born Second." Bilal explains that it refers to being the first child of his parents and the second generation of the soul movement.
