ジャズの演奏家たちは”CATS”と比喩されますが、この街なら“BULLS”と呼ぶのが正解か？そう思えるほどに猛々しい演奏をこの夜は目の当たりにしました。その主人公はシカゴ生まれでNYベースのサックス奏者クリストファー・マクブライドで、会場はシカゴ最古のジャズクラブである「JAZZ SHOWCASE」。このギグを滞在最後に堪能できた僕は幸せ者だと言えます。なんと言っても会場そのものがシカゴジャズの歴史。その場に身を置くだけで、此処で演奏した数々のレジェンドの魂に触れているようでした。そして驚くことに、クリストファー・マクブライド本人はそれらの魂をすべて弾き返すくらいの勢いでブロウし続けたのです。ジャズが今、この瞬間の音楽である。振り返って愛でる骨董品でないのだと教えてくれるようでもありました。終演後アジアツアーを企画中だと語ってくれたクリストファー。彼の勇姿を是非東京でも拝見したいものです。

Jazz musicians are often referred to as “Cats,” but in this city, would it be more accurate to call them “Bulls”? I witnessed a performance that was so fierce it seemed like that. The protagonist was Christopher McBride, a saxophonist born in Chicago and based in New York, and the venue was Chicago's oldest jazz club, “Jazz Showcase.” I was lucky to be able to enjoy this gig at the end of my stay. After all, the venue itself speaks history of Chicago jazz. Just being there, I felt like I was in touch with the spirits of the many legends who had performed there. And to my surprise, Christopher McBride himself continued to blow with such energy that he seemed to be playing back all those spirits. Jazz is the music of the moment. It was as if he was telling us that jazz is not a piece of antique that we look back on with fondness. After the concert, Christopher told us that he was planning an Asian tour. I would love to see him perform in Tokyo.

シカゴで生まれ、2007年にプロとしてのキャリアをスタートさせたクリストファーは、ニューヨークを拠点に活動している。演奏活動に加え、教育、編曲、作曲も手がける。2000年代半ばから、彼は貴重なサイドマンとして、どこにでもいるような活動で、ゆっくりと、しかし着実に頭角を現してきた。今やクリストファーは、世界で最も多才なサックス奏者のひとりとして、ファンや批評家、同業者の間で尊敬を集めている。2012年のデビュー・アルバム『Quatuor de Force』では、グループの前座を務めるだけでなく、ソウルフルでメロディアスな楽曲を作曲する能力も証明した。あらゆる音楽的状況に対応できる演奏能力で賞賛されるマクブライドは、激しいアタックと鋸歯状のトーンを放つ能力を持つが、彼のファースト・アルバムでは、コンテンポラリーR&Bの影響を強く受けた、より慎重でメロウなサウンドを探求しており、キャノンボール・アダレイのポスト・バップの官能性も強く反映されているが、彼の即興演奏は非常に厳格で理路整然としている。作曲家としてのマクブライドは、カリフォルニア州サンタモニカにある18thストリート・アーツ・センターの2022年度メイク・ジャズ・フェローシップ・アーティストに選ばれている。

Christopher Mcbride
Born in Chicago, and starting his professional career there in 2007,
Saxophonist Christopher McBride is based in New York City now. His work includes education, arranging and composition in addition to performance. He has been slowly but steadily turning heads with his ubiquitous work as an invaluable sideman since the mid-2000’s. Now Christopher is gaining respect amongst fans, critics, and his peers as one of the most versatile saxophonists in the world. His 2012 debut album Quatuor de Force certainly establishes his ability to front a group and write his own soulful, melodically indelible tunes. Applauded for his ability to play in all musical situations, McBride has the ability to unleash a fiery attack and serrated tone, but on his first album he explores a more measured, mellow sound heavily influenced by contemporary R&B―with a strong shot of Cannonball Adderley’s post-bop sensuality―but his improvising is very rigorous and cogent. As a composer, McBride was selected as the 2022 Make Jazz Fellowship artist at The 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica, California.
