ニューオリンズでは毎夜夥しい数のライブが街のあちこちで催されるからといって、すべてが良質な音楽とは限らないのが現実です。観光客向けのディキシー・バンドじゃつまらない。アテにしていた老舗の「Snug Harbor」は撮影禁止となかなか思うように音楽的風景をキャプチャできない中で、突然遭遇できたのがこのHobo Gadget Junk Bandでした。ライブハウスがひしめくフレンチメン・ストリートでこの夜異彩を放っていたことは間違いなく、初期トム・ウェイツを彷彿させるその世界観に打ちのめされたような衝撃をいただいた次第。トム・ウェイツを引き合いに出せど、それはあくまで例え。そのパフォーマンスはまったくオリジナルだったし、こんなにクオリティの高い、酔っ払いのための音楽を21世紀のニューオリンズで目撃することができた歓びを噛み締めました。

The reality is that just because there are countless live music events going on every night in New Orleans, it doesn't mean that all of them are high quality music. The Dixieland bands for tourists are boring. At the long-established venue “Snug Harbor,” I was unable to capture the musical scene as I had hoped, because photography was prohibited. But then I suddenly came across the Hobo Gadget Junk Band. There was no doubt that they stood out from the crowd of live music venues on Frenchmen Street that night, and their world view, reminiscent of early Tom Waits, was a real shock to me. Even though I'm comparing them to Tom Waits, that's just an analogy. The performance was completely original, and I savored the joy of being able to witness such high-quality music for happy drinkers in New Orleans in the 21st century.
