一晩しか滞在できないボストンで「Wally’s Café」とハシゴするなら此処と決めてました。ボヘミアン・レストランの異名を持つ「Beehive Restaurant」。訪米前のリサーチで推しの加藤真亜沙さんがプレイしていたヴェニューとしてチェックしていたのです。開演1時間前に乗り込んでグリルドサーモンを堪能して、万全の状態で望んだギグの主役は、ロシアはモスクワ出身のフ美人ルート奏者、ウリア・ムサイエリャン。クラシックの背景を感じさせつつも、この日は彼女の新アルバム参加メンバーでの布陣ということもあり、そこに収録されたブラジリアンな選曲に、南米の伝統的なフォークスタイルも垣間見せるワールド・ミュージックな様相。ジャンルの壁をいとも簡単に超える素晴らしい演奏を楽しむことができました。

I had already decided that if I was only going to stay in Boston for one night, the other option after “Wally's Café” would be this spot. The “Beehive Restaurant” is also known as a bohemian restaurant. I had taken note of this venue before arriving in the states, where my favorite musician, Martha Kato, had played. I arrived an hour before the gig and enjoyed a grilled salmon, and then I was ready for some music. The main performer of the night was Yulia Musayelyan, a beautiful flute player from Moscow. While she displayed a touch of her classical background, she was performing with the musicians who had participated in her new album, and the Brazilian songs on the album had a hint of traditional South American folk style, giving the performance a “world music” feel. I thoroughly enjoyed a wonderful performance that effortlessly transcended genre boundaries.

ムサエリャンは、素晴らしい経歴を持つ音楽家です。モスクワ生まれのフルート奏者である彼女は、演奏家、作曲家、教育者として米国で高い評価を得ています。マンハッタン音楽学校とニューヨーク大学を卒業した彼女は、現在バークリー音楽大学の聴音トレーニングの副学部長を務め、サイドミュージシャンとして25枚以上のアルバムに参加し、リーダーとして4枚のアルバムをリリースしています。新アルバム「Strange Times」でフィーチャーされたカルテットに加え、彼女はマカイウ・トリオの共同リーダーも務め、タクトゥス・アンサンブル（ゲスト指揮者ピエール・ブーレーズ）のソリストとして出演し、国連本部でブルックリン・オーケストラと共演した経験もあります。彼女は、室内楽、クラシック、ラテンジャズからアルメニアの民族音楽、アルゼンチンタンゴまで、あらゆるジャンルで卓越した演奏を披露できる稀有な演奏家の一人です。

Yulia Musayelyan
Musayelyan is a musician of impressive credentials. The Moscow-born flutist has built a strong reputation in the United States as a performer, composer, and academic. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and New York University, she is currently the Assistant Chair of Ear Training at Berklee College of Music, has appeared on more than twenty-five albums as a side musician, and has issued four albums as a leader. In addition to the quartet featured on Strange Times, she co-leads the Macayú Trio, has appeared as a soloist with Tactus Ensemble (with guest conductor Pierre Boulez), and performed with Brooklyn Orchestra at the United Nations Headquarters. She's one of those rare players whose versatility allows them to excel in any context, from chamber classical and Latin jazz to Armenian folk and Argentinean tango.
