三宅純さんからBIGYUKIさんまで、バークリー出身者たちが過去のインタビュー時に必ずと言っていいほど耳にしたボストンの歴史的ヴェニュー、「Wally's Cafe」。ここを訪ねなければこの旅は終われない。そんな勝手な使命感を感じてNYからボストンに向かい、真っ先にその門を叩きました。そしてやはり噂に違わぬ素晴らしいセッションがそこでは行われています。おそらくホストは若手ドラマー（そしておそらくバークリーの学生）イリヤくん。彼が地元ボストンにゆかりあるベースのマックス・リドレーや今もバークリーで教壇に立つピアノのケヴィン・ハリスを迎え撃つ新旧名手同士のスリリングなジャム・セッション。現在はNYベースのサックス奏者サリムくんのブロウも素晴らしい。オーナー家族のひとりであるロイ（Lloyd）さんに挨拶もできたうえ、かつてここで腕を磨いたシンサカイノさんへのメッセージを預かることもできて、はるばるここまでやってきた甲斐を十分に感じることができました。

From Jun Miyake to BIGYUKI, Berklee alumni have almost always mentioned “Wally's Cafe” in past interviews. This historic venue in Boston is a must-see for anyone visiting the city. With this in mind, I headed from New York to Boston and knocked on the door. I sneaked inside, and there was already a great session going on. The host musician was Ilya, a young drummer (and probably a Berklee student). He welcomes Max Ridley, a bass player with connections to the local Boston area, and Kevin Harris, a pianist who still teaches at Berklee, for a thrilling jam session between old and new masters. The saxophonist Salim, who is currently based in New York, also sounded phenomenal. I was also able to say hello to Lloyd, who is a member of the owner's family, and relay a message from him to Shin Sakaino, who once honed his skills here. It was definitely worth the journey.

Wally's Cafeは、現存する家族経営のジャズクラブとしては最古参の存在です。1947年にジョセフ・L・ウォルコット氏によって創設され、365日ライブミュージックをお楽しみいただけます。そして、全米で最も高い評価を受けている音楽家教育機関に囲まれているという幸運に恵まれています。Wally's Cafeで毎晩演奏するバンドは、これらの教育機関の音楽家で構成されており、練習を重ねて腕を磨いています。こうした若き志士の多くは、全米でも最も才能あるミュージシャンであると一部で考えられています。Wally's Cafeが「トレーニング・グラウンド」と呼ばれる所以です。このステージ腕を磨いた著名なミュージシャンは数知れません。約70年にわたり、Wally's Cafeは一貫してミュージシャンが演奏し、コミュニティが音楽を聴くためのフォーラムを提供することに専心してきました。彼らはこの取り組みを今後も継続していきます。

Wally's Cafe
Wally's Cafe is among the oldest family-owned-and-operated jazz clubs in existence. It was founded in 1947 by Mr. Joseph L. Walcott. They feature live music 365 days a year. Wally’s is fortunate to be surrounded by some of the nation’s most acclaimed institutions for educating musicians. The bands featured nightly at the club are made up of musicians from these institutions, practicing and perfecting their craft. Many of these young aspiring musicians are considered by some to be among the most talented in the nation. This is why Wally’s is considered the “Training Ground”. The number of celebrated musicians who have used the stage in the process of perfecting their art is long. For almost seven decades they have consistently maintained a dedication to providing a forum for musicians to perform, and for the community to hear music. They continue to forge ahead in this endeavor.
