街の中心街とは外れたエリアに、素敵なジャズクラブを発見。それがこの「SOUTH」でした。ステージ壁面にはジョージ・ガーシュウィンの引用句“Life is a lot like jazz...it’s best when you improvise”と刻まれているあたり、期待値が高まります。壇上を飾ったのはフィラデルフィアのレジェンド、グレン・ブライアンと彼の仲間たち。ボーカルにアネッサ・ラレーをfeatして豪華編成でジャズからラテン、ソウルまで彩り豊かなセットリストを堪能することができました。中でも白眉の演奏が“Just two of us”でしたが、グレンの経歴にはカルロス・サンタナと並んでグローバー・ワシントン Jr.が共演者として紹介されていたことで、腑に落ちました。ちなみに「SOUTH」はその名の通り素晴らしい南アメリカの料理を堪能できますので是非ディナーも音楽と共に楽しまないと損です。

I discovered a wonderful jazz club in an area off the main street. It was called “SOUTH”. The quote “Life is a lot like jazz...it's best when you improvise” by George Gershwin engraved on the wall behind the stage raised my expectations. The stage was graced by Philadelphia legend Glenn Bryan and his friends. Featuring vocalist Anessa LaRae, the band performed a colorful set list that ranged from jazz to Latin and Soul. The highlight of the performance was “Just two of us,” and it made sense when I saw that Glenn's career history listed Grover Washington Jr. alongside Carlos Santana as collaborators. Incidentally, as the name “SOUTH” suggests, you can enjoy wonderful South American cuisine, so you'd be missing out if you didn't enjoy dinner with the music.
