この街で唯一腰を落ち着けてインタビューに対応してくれたピアニスト、オスカー・ロシニョーリがサポートで入るということでニューオリンズの“レジェンド”、ジョン・ブッテの公演に。ジョンはもしかしたら僕がはじめて体験するクレオール系アーティストだったかもしれません。いずれにせよジャズはもちろんソウルもゴスペルも、ブルースもカリプソも内包する表現はニューオリンズを通過した音楽の歴史絵巻のようで、こんな遠くまで来たからこそ味わえる唯一無二の代物でした。ジャズを知りたいと願い、はじめた旅で、その総本山に辿り着いて最後に想ったことが、そうやって音楽にラベルを貼り付けて自分が知っている他のなにかと一緒くたにしてしまうことが如何に的外れであるか？そんな当たり前にして大きなテーマにやっと向き合ったようにも思えます。ありがとう！ジョン・ブッテ、ありがとう！ニューオリンズ。

The pianist Oscar Rossignoli, the only person in the town who was willing to sit down for an interview, was going to play with a New Orleans “legend” John Boutté. John was probably the first Creole artist I had ever experienced. In any case, his music, which encompassed jazz, soul, gospel, blues and calypso, was like a musical history scroll that passed through New Orleans, and it was a one-of-a-kind experience that I could only enjoy because I had come this far. On this journey I started in the hopes of learning about jazz, and when I finally arrived at its spiritual home, the last thing I thought was how wrong it is to label music and lump it together with other things I know. It seems like I've finally come to face a big theme that is so obvious. Thank you, John Boutté, thank you, New Orleans.

John Boutté is one of those New Orleans entertainers who can seem like a force just barely contained. He’s a jazz singer and a soul singer, though sometimes not in that order, and a wickedly effective communicator. He works hard to connect with his audiences, and more often than not he succeeds mightily. To know John is to hold onto the coattails of a butterfly. To hear him sing is to feel a brief touch of the wing.
