前日「The Green Mill」で体験したノスタルジックな空気から一変。まるでデヴィッド・リンチの世界に迷い込んだような街はずれの「Constellation」で、僕はこのショーの目撃者になることができました。終演後、ジェイソン・スタインがインタビューの中で応えてくれたように、これはジャズかその周辺の音楽として語られるものではなく、ましてや本人たちはそんなカテゴライズされることが好きでもなく、彼らは瞬間的な芸術としてこの即興音楽を奏でているのです。たった２日間のうちに、このシカゴという街がどれほど芳醇な音楽の恵みに溢れているのかを感じました。だって短期間のスケジューリングでは訪問が叶わない、ブルースのヴェニューやハウスのクラブだってまだあるわけですから。そう。音楽という名の畑にあるのはジャンルを示すラベルではなく、あくまでパーソナルな良し悪しの基準だけなのでしょう。

It was a complete change from the nostalgic atmosphere I had experienced at The Green Mill the day before. At the “Constellation” on the outskirts of the city, it was as if I had wandered into the world of David Lynch, which I was able to actually witness. As Jason Stein said in his interview after the show, this is not something that can be talked about as jazz or music in its surrounding area, and moreover, the musicians themselves don't like being categorized in such a way, and they play this improvised music as a momentary art form. In just two days, I felt how rich this city of Chicago is in terms of music. Because there are still other blues venues and house clubs that you can't physically visit in such a short period of time. In the field of music, there needn’t be no labels to indicate genres, but only personal standards of good and bad.

ジョシュ・バーマンは国際的に知られるコルネット奏者であり作曲家である。彼は、高い評価を得ているOld Idea、Josh Berman and his gang、そして自身のトリオを率いてきた。シカゴのジャズおよび即興音楽シーンに欠かせない貢献者であることに加え、バーマンはシカゴ出身のマイク・リードとともにコンサートのプロデューサーとしても活躍し、過去20年間に数百ものショーをプロデュースしてきた。

Josh Berman is an internationally recognized cornetist and composer. He has led the acclaimed Old Idea, Josh Berman and his gang, and his own trio. In addition to being an indispensable contributor to Chicago’s jazz and improvised music scene, Berman has been a concert presenter with fellow Chicagoan Mike Reed, producing hundreds of shows over the past 20 years.
Jason Stein is among the mere handful of improvisers who play the bass clarinet exclusively. Stein leads the acclaimed trio Locksmith Isidore as well as his own quartet. He contributes to several of the leading bands on Chicago’s new-music scene and has brought a vital voice to the freest of free-jazz jams. Stein’s playing showcases an extraordinary expertise on the bass clarinet, which ranges from powerful post-bop lines to ear-grabbing wails in the altissimo range.
